The Top 5 Instagrammable Spots South of the River

When you arrive in London to study abroad, sharing the sights around the place where you’re staying is a great way for your family and friends to be part of the experience. Here are the top five places south of the river I recommend if your base is at or around Britannia South Bank.

#1 Tower Bridge

This impressive suspension bridge is an unmistakeable landmark and one of the most iconic sights of the city. It is photogenic from every angle, with its two huge towers and the moveable roadway that breaks in half to allow ships travelling along the River Thames to pass.

If you want the ultimate shot, it looks amazing very early in the morning when there are fewer people and the sunrise colours the sky behind it. For something different, you can find out the bridge lift times from their website, or go up inside the bridge and take incredible shots with the city as a backdrop.

#2 The London Eye

If you’ve chosen Britannia South Bank as your student housing, London’s most popular tourist attraction is within walking distance, and this massive observation wheel can be seen from almost every vantage along South Bank.

To me there’s nothing more symbolic of the city today than the London Eye with the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben in the background. But there are plenty of other angles from which you can take fantastic pictures as you wander along the River Thames. If you book a ride on the Eye, the panoramic views will create unforgettable memories – and photos!

#3 Millennium Bridge

There are countless Instagram opportunities at Millennium Bridge, so you’ll be kept busy! The first thing many people think of is Harry Potter, so if you’re a fan you’ll love the chance to get a photo on the bridge. But even apart from that you can take pictures of several London icons, like St Paul’s Cathedral, the Globe Theatre and the Tate Modern. If you manage to get up early you’ll definitely get the best pictures, with fewer people and the sun glinting off the steel structure.

#4 Tate Modern

Just a 10-15 minute walk from the Britannia South Bank student housing, London’s famous gallery of contemporary art, the Tate Modern, is situated at Bankside. The gallery houses a large collection of UK and international art, which you can enjoy for free!

For Instagram opportunities, the Tate Modern provides endless places, both inside (although you aren’t allowed to photograph the temporary exhibitions) and outside. You can even get a great shot of the Millenium Bridge and St Paul’s Cathedral from the gallery’s café on the 6th floor. But perhaps one of the most dramatic times is at night, when the building is illuminated in a vivid blue light that reflects into the River Thames.

#5 The Shard

Whether you go up into the Shard itself (which is quite expensive at more than £20) or photograph it from below, it’s still just as Instagrammable! Soaring 95 storeys, this shining skyscraper is an impressive architectural feat and a fantastic place to take pictures from various angles. After visiting many times, I eventually did go up to the top – and wow! You get a 360-degree view of the city, and you can get almost all the famous landmarks into one long panoramic shot!

If you’re lucky enough to have chosen Britannia South Bank for your student housing, London’s highest building is an easy walk away.
