London Pop Ups: What Are They & Which Ones You Can't Miss This Winter

While any time of the year is exciting in London, if you’re spending your study abroad experience in this fantastic city in winter there’s a huge number of things to keep you entertained – and help you forget about the cold weather. As well as being the perfect time to explore some of the many galleries and museums, there’s also a lot of ‘pop ups’ going on.

These temporary bars, themed dinners, markets, performances and exhibitions appear in all sorts of weird and wonderful places, and if you’re looking for the full student life experience, you won’t want to miss them. Brave the cold and get out of your student housing – London’s pop ups await!

Perfect Pop Ups for Winter 2019/2020

Some absolutely wonderful events genuinely do seem to come out of nowhere, with little or no promotion, but others are a long time in the planning. While it’s always good to keep an eye out for announcements of spontaneous things going on around your student housing, London’s official calendar of events is looking good. I’ve chosen a few of my favourites to share with you.

Cocktails and Pirates

The ‘Pirates of the Hidden Spirit’ late night cocktail experience takes place in the Hidden Spirit Ship, a quirky pirate-themed bar in SE1 that’s housed in a real ship. If the location doesn’t already sound fun enough, the experience sees you getting involved in pirate treasure theft while drinking your way through some delicious cocktails. It will take place on multiple dates from mid-November.

For a change of pace and an absolutely delicious way to spend a chilly evening, Journey is a mouth-watering culinary experience featuring food and drink from all over the world. Beautifully created to mirror some of the greatest journeys in the world (the Silk Road, Eastern Block, the Raj and Castilla) you’ll even be able to claim it’s educational! Hosted by the fabulous Chelsea Funhouse in SW1, I think this is one of the best ways to get all your friends together for a group Christmas meal. But which journey will it be…?

Mamma Mia the Party!

If you loved the movie Mamma Mia, get ready for the party to end all parties at this immersive experience, where you’ll think you’ve landed in the Greek Islands and not SE10 at the O2 arena. Running until February 2020, what better way to escape the chill than to take a trip to an authentically re-created rustic Greek taverna, complete with traditional Greek food and wine, while watching the much-loved story unfold to the fabulous music of ABBA? Get ready to party!

The Bar under the Bridge

No prizes for guessing what this is, but within easy walking distance of many people’s student housing, London’s Bar Under the Bridge pops up in the winter months at Southbank to provide a festive, fun and very sociable place to eat, drink and be merry. It’s decked out like a beautiful Alpine lodge and you’ll be able to snuggle up and play board games in the heated booths while drinking hot rum, mulled wine and craft beer, and savouring street food from the famous Baggio Burgers.

The 90s Brunch

It doesn’t matter if you weren’t even born in the 90s, there’s no denying it was one of the most iconic decades of recent times. Find out what all the fun was about at the fabulous 90s Brunch events, which pop up all over the city not only in winter, but all throughout the year! Dress up in your best 90s outfit and join the fun at these themed nights full of fantastic music, ‘far-out’ cocktails, fresh entertainment and as much fun as you can handle.

These are just a few of the best pop ups coming up over the next few months, but be warned – once you start it’s hard to stop. If you want more, you can find a good round up of upcoming events here. Enjoy!
