Halls of Residence or Homestay: Choosing the Right Accommodation for the Authentic London Student Experience

International students in the UK can choose from a variety of student accommodation. London has a wide range of Halls of Residence, homestays and apartments. If you’ve never been here before how do you know what to choose? We asked Paula, a fashion student from Brazil who has studied in the city a few times, to give her opinion about two of these options.

Why Choose a Hall of Residence?

If, like me, you are looking for the best student experience in London then a Hall of Residence is for you.

You’ll have a room in a building that houses students only. You get to meet people your own age who are also studying in London. If you don’t know anyone in the city then this is the perfect way to meet friends and to feel like you are part of a community.

“Making friends is easy – you won’t be alone in a strange city…”

I particularly like the convenience of the Halls of Residence. The rooms are furnished, there is WiFi, and you can cook in the fully equipped kitchen. Some of these buildings also have great communal facilities like a gym or a student lounge where you can meet other residents.

“It’s all about location…”

And it’s the location that is perhaps the best thing of all about this type of student accommodation. London’s Halls of Residence are mostly located in the centre of London, so if you’re only staying for a few weeks or for a semester, you get the experience of living in the heart of the Capital.

Why Choose a Homestay?

If you would like the opportunity to live as a member of a British family, then you might want to consider a homestay as an option for your student accommodation.

London families open their homes to visiting international students and provide them with a safe and welcoming home away from home.

“Live like a real Londoner with real Londoners.”

If you’re here learning English then this really is the best type of student accommodation. London host families speak English to you and to each other.  You can’t get a much better opportunity to practise your English than that!

Many of the students I have met have come here for the first time or have come from much smaller towns or cities. Sometimes they prefer a homestay over a hall of residence. You’ll live with a friendly, hospitable family in their home. If you’re worried about homesickness then this can be a good solution for you.

“It’s a home away from home.”

One of the advantages of a homestay is the host. He or she will be able to give you practical advice during your stay in London. I always think it’s a good idea to have a connection with someone who can watch out for you if you’ve never lived independently before.

You’ll also enjoy extra living space with homestay student accommodation. London host families live in various areas all over the city and as a student living in a homestay you will be able to enjoy access to the family living areas and feel part of the family!
