If you choose Nutford House for your student housing, London’s Marylebone district will be your neighbourhood. This is one of my favourite parts of the city and if you have the chance to spend a few weeks living here then I strongly recommend that you take it.

A Profile of the Area

Marylebone is located in the heart of the West End of London, covering an area from Marble Arch to the border of Regents Park. It has its own railway station and includes the tube stations of Edgware Road and Baker Street.

To me it feels like a village in the middle of the capital city – it has charming architecture, some very old churches and a lovely high street that’s packed with independent shops. However, it’s also really central and if you’re living here you’ll be able to walk to many iconic locations like Oxford Street and Hyde Park. The bus network in the area is vast so you’ll have access to the whole city by quick and cheap public transport.

It’s also worth enjoying the charm and amenities of the neighbourhood especially if this is where you have your student housing. London offers so many different living experiences, and Marylebone has got to be one of the best, in my opinion.

Here are some of the wonderful things on the doorstep of Nutford House.

Shopping

Shopping experiences range from high end to artisan to popular.

  • Oxford Street – You’ll be a few minutes’ walk from Selfridges where you can browse designer clothes and admire the world famous Food Hall.
  • Marylebone High Street – This is a charming high street that includes artisan and independent shops. Don’t forget to visit Daunt Books, a bookshop that has arranged its collection according to country.
  • Farmers’ Market – This market has more than 40 stalls selling seasonal fruit and vegetables as well as charcuterie, cheeses and other delicacies. It runs every Sunday from 10am to 2pm.

Art & Culture

If you are looking for cultural experiences there are plenty available to you in the area around your student housing. London’s most famous resident Sherlock Holmes is honoured in a museum nearby, there is a renowned art gallery and you can enjoy concerts and films locally.

  • The Sherlock Holmes Museum – Open every day from 9.30am to 6pm. There is a small admission charge. For details see the website.
  • Wigmore Hall – This concert hall runs a programme of classical music, and one of my favourite experiences is the Sunday morning concert which includes a glass of sherry with your ticket. It’s so English and it doesn’t cost too much either!
  • The Wallace Collection – The Georgian house is almost as lovely as the collection of French paintings and objects from the eighteenth century. Entry is free and there is a great restaurant on site.

Green Spaces

Even though this area is very central and close to some of the busiest parts of the capital, you will still be able to enjoy some amazing green spaces just a few blocks away from your student housing. London somehow manages to preserve some stunning parks right in the heart of the vibrant hustle and bustle.

  • Regents Park & Zoo – This park is particularly delightful in the summer months due to its huge floral displays and beautiful trees. You can even catch a performance at the Open Air Theatre in the long summer evenings.
  • Hyde Park – At the Marble Arch end you’ll find Hyde Park, a huge green space where you can rent bikes, visit the Princess Diana Memorial Fountain, hire a rowboat or just enjoy a picnic in the gardens.

If you’re planning to study here in the summer then Marylebone is one of the top locations for accommodation. It will give you a taste of London life at its most charming.
